During the digitization of video carriers, electrical metadata is gathered through ISR (Interactive Status Report) events and/or RF (Radio Frequency) traces. These signals clearly highlight issues during the transfer process. If there's an erroneous physical interaction, such as e.g. a dirty tape or a smeared reading head in the VTR, the discernible change in the signal will be logged to indicate the occurrence of a transfer error.
As this method relies on detecting real physical interactions, its results are unambiguous with no false positives.

When analyzing a video file generated from a prior transfer of a physical carrier to a digital format, both the human eye and various third-party analysis tools can undoubtedly identify errors in the picture.
While recognizing the presence of an error is important pinpointing the exact source of the error becomes essential when aiming for the highest possible quality in the produced file. The origin of such errors could range from defects in the camera or playout system to potentially undetected transfer glitches during the migration from one carrier generation to the next (e.g., from 1" to IMX).
NOA's transfer quality control diligently logs tangible physical transfer issues leading to picture and/or sound errors. With certainty, the operator can conclude that the error under analysis was indeed introduced during the preceding ingest attempt and initiate potential preventive measures, such as initiating a second ingest cycle that may involve tape cleaning or VTR maintenance.

During a running transfer, all relevant quality- and content related information is presented to the operator in a comprehensive overview, allowing for individual usage depending on workflow.
The NOA VTRi-1 module, situated between players and the ingest station, manages the transmission of remote control signals to the players and also sends back ISR events and/or the recorded RF trace (captured by a special sensor plate) from the VTRs to the FrameLector recording software.
When recording, FrameLector creates a mathematically lossless mezzanine format to keep the original and native quality of the ingested tape. This locally generated working format is subsequently transmitted to the General Public Path (GPP) server, serving as a hub for various client and server applications to access the recorded media, alongside quality markers and other technical metadata gathered during the ingestion process.
Subsequent processes such as quality control, segmentation, or video-level correction can tap into the highest attainable quality rendition of the original content. This not only enables precise frame-by-frame segmentation but also facilitates level corrections while remaining within the lossless domain.
Upon the completion of all steps requiring operator intervention, server-side processors seamlessly transcode the content into the designated archival format(s). These formats may encompass any combination of lossless or lossy options, such as e.g. FFv1 and IMX D10 in parallel.
