Already in the very early stages of the archive project, SRF turned to NOA to create the workflow which leads to an optimal throughput in digitisation and future content management. During these steps, the hardware existing on site was used and integrated. A complete integration of the existing Quadriga digitisations and quality reports was realised. During the radio archive project, a fully replicated house database for the radio archive was built, where a comprehensive full text search allows searching the whole database content with fully linked audio data.
The existing house database is at the moment accessed by several hundred users within SRF. The key advantage of the existing house database lies in its very fast search abilities, as well as its long term approved stability. The prerequisites for NOA were simple: Please show us a system which is just as good as the one we do already have… PLUS audio. (which is – by the way - a typical broadcaster’s wish too often misunderstood).
A deep analysis of the Radio archive data followed. NOA proposed to populate the whole data structure of the existing house database in a highly sophisticated recursive data model, where the structure is as light as possible, but includes much faster full text searches than Redmond or Oracle.
With the NOA Catalog application it was proven that even using a standard SQL server (due to available licenses MSSQL was chosen) a search for any item within a full text content of 15 million words takes less than 400 milliseconds.
Throughout the project SBR decided to extend the ingest capabilities with one complete NOA N 6000 Recording station, which digitizes up to 3 tapes or analog sources in parallel. This rounds up perfectly well the workflow system with high quality ingest devices which generates content INCLUDING quality.
The need to integrate a Quadriga station into the workflow system of NOA Job Database, including a metadata integration on database level of quality report and coding history, eases up the workflow, as one can trace now any digitisation request from within the workflow system. Various metadata transformations, keeping 3 databases in SYNC are performed by the NOA DB Scripter, the tool for metadata alignment within archives. With this installation NOA again sets a new milestone in combining adapted techniques with standard products to the maximum benefit for the customer.
